It’s Not Just the Food that Cause Migraine Headache

Being beset with migraine headaches can be detrimental since they can result to weakening and incapacitating conditions. Individuals vary with the symptoms they manifest to indicate any pending encounter with migraine headaches.

Known symptoms may include double vision, nausea and head pain, which can be so severe it will render an individual inept for any form of activity. Most often a person suffering from migraine headaches have to resort to heavy doses of pain-killers and are advised to rest in a dimly-lighted room.

Migraine headaches can afflict almost anyone regardless of social or economic status or ethnicity. For this matter migraine headaches can be triggered by certain factors such as odors, stress and food.

Some of the food that cause migraine headaches can be classified into two categories. The first group of food that cause migraine headaches includes food eaten in its plain, natural or unprocessed state while the second food group includes food that cause migraine headaches when used as an ingredient or processed along with other foods. In order to effectively classify each food, the migraine sufferer is advised to maintain a food log.

Food Log

A migraine sufferer out on a serious mission to avoid if not to eliminate his migraine episodes should consider the use of a food log known as a dietary log. Though this may require a lot of discipline on the migraine sufferer’s part, maintaining the dietary log will provide a basis for determining the exact food that cause migraine headache attacks.

Each daily food intake will be recorded for over a certain period of time and any incident of a migraine attack during the day will prompt the migraine sufferer to review the log entries. He should take note at what point in time the symptoms started then check the dietary log regarding the food taken starting from the given point in time.

The most common foods known to have instigated migraine headaches are bananas, citrus fruits, avocado, beans, peanut butter, dairy products, pickled herrings and the likes.

Processed Foods

Canned meats, seasonings, soy sauce and similar products contain high levels of MSG to serve both as a preservative and flavor enhancer; hence the produced foods cause migraine headaches. Nitrates, on the other hand, are used in processing meat by-products such as hotdogs, luncheon meats and other processed meats that require a high level of preservative; similarly the produced foods cause migraine headaches.

Other Migraine Triggers

It’s worth mentioning, however, that the mentioned foods that cause migraine headaches are not harmful entirely on its own. Studies show that certain factors may exist in connection with our work, lifestyle or environment. These, plus a supplement of the said types of food, result in a food-absorption activity within our body system that may trigger migraine headaches.

Hence, an unhealthy lifestyle like skipping meals, smoking and not having enough rest or sleep or even factors such as a woman’s periodic menstrual cycle, if supplemented by these foods may result to health disorders.
