Do I Have an Optical Migraine?

Did you ever experience migraine headaches and the pain it gives you?

If yes then you know that it is a very miserable thing. Many people have accompanying feelings and symptoms like a visual aura (light lines or partly missing sight), vomiting or feeling dizzy. In most cases these feelings are the prelude or first warning that there will be the pain coming shortly.

There are instances known when all the above signs are manifest but the pain is missing. You probably see lights flashing and rotating, develop an extreme sensitivity to lights or feel dizzy or have nausea. And you wait and maybe panic for the things to come.

This is what is known as an optical migraine. Some may also call it acephalic migraine or ocular migraine.

An optical migraine is just like a complete migraine without the excruciating end of it. And while you wait and realize that the bad part will be left out you are probably a bit baffled and ask yourself what is going on this time or whether a new unknown sickness will arrive and is playing around with you.

It makes sense that all this could be very worrying and confusing especially if it hits you during driving or any other activity where your complete attention is needed. Be sure to have an instant brake or discontinue the activity for at least an hour.

Is there a Known Reason for Migraine?

Under normal circumstances there is no need to worry or to panic. Optical migraines are in many cases triggered through the same conditions that are responsible for the regular migraine. The underlying cause of a migraine is not exacly known since there are too many probabilities.

Theories are going from dietary imbalances, food allergies, brain edemas and others. To be the victim of a migraine is certainly a problem but it is usually not connected to a very serious issue. It is presumably a special way of bodily communication and it is difficult to decipher.

Visit your Doc when you get it the first Time

It is a very good idea to visit your doctor when you are experiencing your first optical migraine. He will most likely tell you to watch your condition as good as possible and that you should inform him immediately when it is getting worse or different.

The experience as such will only be classified as a migraine if it hits you more than one time, maybe 3-8 times a year otherwise it is a one time phenomenon.

There is probably no treatment necessary when you only have the aura or the other visual signs but no headache. In any case make it a strong habit to write down everything pertaining to the incident, especially what you did and everything you ate the last 48 hours.

Some brain and eye diseases start with these types of visual occurences so make sure you visit your doc as soon as the optical experiences change in a sudden or dramatic way.
