Know More About Vestibular Migraine
Sudden turn of the head, traveling in a vehicle, being in the midst of a crowded place, watching television and reading books can sometimes trigger a neurological disorder called vestibular migraine.
Balance disorder causes vestibular migraine and usually affects more women than men mostly on their menstrual periods, and can also be seen in children. This affects about 5-18 per cent of the population. Vestibular migraine affects a part in the inner ear responsible for maintaining balance and preventing a person form falling or swaying.
Aside from the trouble with equilibrium, vestibular migraine can be inherited, caused by reaction to certain foods or drink, hypoglycemia or abnormally low blood sugar level, and a person’s diet.
To help differentiate this type of migraine from the others, the following symptoms would be present: dizziness or vertigo resulting from sudden body movement or changes in the brain vessel, motion sickness or floor moving sensation, vomiting or severe nausea, light sensitivity and even depression.
Flashes of light and blind spots similar to other types of migraine are present, but throbbing and painful migraine headache will follow about fifteen minutes later. Some people relate experiences of high sensitivity to sound and ringing in the ears but are not always associated with pain.
Panic or anxiety attacks, pain in the ears, phobic behavior, and muffled sounds are other symptoms associated with vestibular migraine attacks as well.
The usual trigger foods for vestibular migraine are those that contain MSGs or monosodium glutamate, cheese, caffeine, chocolate and red wine. Irregularity in the sleeping patterns, low blood sugar and too much stress also contribute to the severity and frequency of vestibular migraine attacks.
In terms of treatment, a qualified doctor would recommend either of the following: Fiorinal, sumatripan, Midin, Acetazolamide, Meclizine, Antivert, Bonine, beta-blocking agents, calcium channel blockers and other medicines for the treatment of the migraine.
A moderate exercise and reevaluation of the daily nutritional diet are also part of the natural preventive treatments for vestibular migraine along with the avoidance of the above mentioned trigger foods, stress management, and dosage of water pill with reduction of salt intake for women in their menstrual periods.
Aside from the medicines and reminders in the diet, rest awhile once you are experiencing the first waves of the migraine attack. Since this primarily concerns motion, stop what you are doing but make sure that you are in safe and relatively comfortable space.
A silent and dark room can help alleviate the ringing in your ears and flashes in your line of vision. These are also recommended with other types of migraines. It would not be a bad idea to drink herbal teas or get involved in aromatherapy.
Most people may be afraid of the symptoms of vestibular migraine, assuming that there are other serious disorders causing it. Although manageable, anyone who experiences these should consult a doctor to prevent self-misdiagnosis.
While seeking treatment, it is best to decrease, if not totally eliminate, excessive smoking and drinking so as not to compound the pain that comes with this disorder.
