Stomach Migraines – Diagnosis and Treatments

Some people may get confused as to the connection between the digestive system and a disorder known as migraine.

In fact,, the word migraine can be used to refer to pain as a result of reacting to stimuli which we also know as trigger factor. Hence, stomach migraines would simply mean a reaction of the digestive system against certain stimuli that brings sharp abdominal pains.

How to Self-Diagnose Stomach Migraines

This type of disorder starts from childhood wherein sudden and unexplained abdominal pains are felt and at times accompanied by nausea, headache, throwing up, paleness and ruddiness. Some people weren’t lucky enough to outgrow this disorder hence, knowing its symptoms can help in overcoming its episodes. However, there are those who ignored the significance of its treatment, which is why they are still the present day sufferers of this disorder.

To self-diagnose if you have it, observe the duration of your stomach pain. If the pain lasts for two to three hours with an intensity that renders you incapacitated for three hours at the most, chances are you have stomach migraine. At worst, this disorder can last for as long as 72 hours if untreated. There are instances that migraine trigger factors such as bright lights, strong odors, stress and anxiety can make it even worse. This information if present can be communicated to your doctor for evaluation.

There are cases of stomach migraines that are accompanied by migraine visual impairment. Aside from the abdominal pain, the sufferer will be bothered by an aura of bright light which will present him with visual difficulties. Although temporary, it’s quite discomforting for the sufferer to be under this condition since the aura of the dispersed light obscures his vision.

Stomach migraine is common among children because this is the stage where it starts. There are cases when it was left untreated because children could be quite difficult to treat with proper medication. Leaving it untreated is main the reason why some carry this disorder even during adulthood.

Avoid Self-Administration of Medical Treatments

Medical practitioners are one in recommending Valporic acid or VPA as treatment for stomach migraines. Valporic acid is clinically used as a mood stabilizing drug for treating convulsions, seizures and migraine headaches.
However, there are those who do not react well to this medication hence other basic migraine medications are prescribed. Usually, the age of the sufferer is a consideration here so it is necessary to consult your doctor rather than self-administer in order to avoid the side effects. Furthermore, knowing the factors that could trigger stomach migraines can aid in determining other preventive therapies.
